In the world of stardom, Kento is someone who seems to have it all. Kento is someone who places great importance in his looks and the demeanor he presents himself with, mixing lofty ambition with boyish charm. Kento is not coy at all about his pursuits that his career affords him — he pours everything he has into his health and appearance with a strictness that borders on devout. In that respect, Kento can seem overly self-assured to the point of vain, as if his beauty and charisma have never once failed him in getting what he wants. And he's honest about that too, his reason for becoming an idol seeming anything but altruistic: he did it to get women. Kento has a voracious appetite for relationships, and it's rare to catch him in a situation where he's not in contact with girls, whether online or in person. He craves the mass sum of attention that fame gets him, not even fearing the potential for scandals this opens him up to. Quantity over quality is the name of the game, when he can have anyone he sets his sights on and move on just as quickly.
What he's not honest about is what set him on that path. Kento desires being desired. As a child, he was always alone. His mother walked out on him and he was bullied at school. Kento grew up believing that selfishness would serve as a shield against the things that hurt and betrayed him in the past, playing the part but not actually buying into the idea of friends and teamwork. He is convinced he's empty inside, and the only thing that gives him fulfillment, the feeling of being alive, is attention, no matter how shallow. In fact, it's such a delicate balance that it's laughably easy to crack his veneer. Spurning his advances and pointing out that he has high walls and a practiced mask on like a spoiled child who's never been denied anything quickly punctures his confidence and causes him to withdraw. His reactions to being called out range from despondent to outright cold, a shadow of the observant and professional person he usually is. In his defensiveness, he's quick to blind himself to his own mistakes and lash out at others instead.
However, there's passion and empathy behind the flirtatiousness and the cavalier way he treats people, the hollow attempts to connect to those around him. Claiming that he doesn't have the willpower or fastidiousness of the other members, Kento doesn't seem to realize how good he is at what he does. He has heart in spades and it shines bright when he dances, sings, or acts, creating a spotlight that's hard to ignore when he performs. His everyday attention to detail makes him considerate of the emotional needs of others, to the point where he's understood as someone who's gentlemanly even to other men. He'd deny it, but his ability to read others is a strength of his, so much that he's more able to see the good in others than he is himself. This goes so far as to manifest as selflessness when faced with his own worth versus that of others, like when he was willing to sacrifice himself for his groupmates during a drama set accident involving explosives.
Beyond the image he sells, Kento harbors terror and elation and a spark of hopefulness for the idea of a real relationship — for really being loved for who he is, faults and all.
Of course, those faults aren't limited to just the serious, deep-seated emotional traumas. Don't touch his bangs. Don't take away his social media, or put him face to face with an insect. Don't saddle him with arts and crafts unless the aim is crushing disappointment in his tactile clumsiness. All of these things are essential for him to be a functioning human, because — well.
